US Swimmers return home

Saturday, August 20 2016 by SNTV
  • Two American swimmers, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger, returned to the USA on Friday (19th August), after being allowed to leave Brazil when they testified about an alleged robbery at the Olympic Games that police said was made up.

Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were seen arriving at Miami Airport on Friday (19th August), after arriving from Rio de Janeiro.

Brazilian police in Rio announced on Thursday that US Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte and three of his team-mates had not been held at gunpoint after a night of partying, as Lochte had claimed.

Instead, police said the men had vandalised a petrol station bathroom while intoxicated, and were questioned by armed guards before they paid for the damage and left.

Lochte himself left Brazil earlier this week.

The lawyer for James Feigen, the third US swimmer involved in the saga, said the athlete would make a payment of 10,800 US Dollars and leave Brazil later on Friday.

The drama surrounding the alleged robbery of American swimmers - and their ever-changing descriptions of it - has dominated Olympic headlines and angered the host country Brazil.

The saga has been an enormous embarrassment for the US Olympic team.
