Germany fans hoping for a double gold in soccer

Sunday, August 21 2016 by SNTV
  • Delighted German fans left the Maracana stadium on Friday (19 August) after seeing their women's football team win the gold medal after beating Sweden 2-1.

While the majority of fans at the Maracana on Friday were unsurprisingly Brazilian - most of whom cheered for the Swedes - the Germans who watched the game said how happy they were to see their side prevail and hoped that the men would follow suit on Saturday when they face Brazil in the gold medal match.

The Swedish women, who had previously beaten tournament favourites USA and the hosts Brazil, found the German team a step to far and had to be content with a silver medal.

    15. 01:40 SOUNDBITE: (English) Phillip Lundel, from Stockholm:
"We played a good game and played much better than against Brazil and it feels good. They didn't embarrass themselves so, yeah, we got a silver, we have to be proud about that and I think the girls should be proud about it as well. Congratulations to Germany because they were the better team today."

    7. 00:35 SOUNDBITE: (German) Frank Krause, from Potsdam, Germany: "Well, I think it is amazing that we are at the top now also with women's soccer, to be Olympic champion is really great. As world champion - this in men's soccer and now Olympic champions in women's soccer, and hopefully tomorrow also Olympic champions in men's soccer -this would be the high point of German football which is absolutely world class."
