Schippers disappointed with silver medal

Monday, August 22 2016 by SNTV
  • Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers said on Saturday (20th August) that she's disappointed to leave Rio with just the one silver medal to her name.

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Dafne Schippers, Netherlands:

"I came here for two medals. And I came here for gold medals in the two (events). That was my biggest goal. But she ran a very very good race. I'm happy now with the silver one, but it feels a little bit different than the other day."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Dafne Schippers, Netherlands:

    (on injury ahead of 100m)

"Yeah, I think so. Two days before the first race, the 100 (metres), I had this one injury that was, I think, hard at that moment. And I cannot run my normal race because I had too much problems."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Dafne Schippers, Netherlands:

"Yeah, it was a tough year, it was very hard. Because I was World Champion, and after the whole Netherlands was totally different. Everywhere I walk on the street, or something, people know me, and say hey, you can go for the gold in the one and the two hundred metres, but in my head it was very, very difficult to do that. I know that. In the Netherlands it's very normal to go: 'Oh, you can do that. That's no problem'. But the sprint world is different. In the Netherlands, they didn't understand it always, because, yeah you did it and you can do that, that's all and its easy. That's the mind in the Netherlands. Yeah, that's sometimes very hard to deal with and now they are very happy for me for the silver medal. It's now different, people see that it's not that easy."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Dafne Schippers, Netherlands:

"Yeah, it's relay and you know you can run a very good race or a very bad race. There's nothing between that and yeah, there was a problem I thought that I saw my teammate, but it was another girl and she was running in my lane and I was going to run my race and there was a moment I thought 'Ok, that was not my teammate', so I stopped running because yeah, when I run to hard, then she's... then I'm lost and yeah, that was hard, but yeah, I came here for the one and the two and the former one is a little bit more of an extra thing."
