ODI: Mathews reflects on victory over Australia

  • Reaction from the captain after Sri Lanka levelled the one-day series against Australia with an 82-run victory in the second one-day international in Colombo on Wednesday (24th August).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka captain:

"We were put under pressure in the last couple of overs, especially our opening partnerships haven't been great right from the test series to the one-dayers. We need to try and put in a big effort. Starc (Mitchell Starc, Australia) he's been getting wickets up front with the new ball. It's not easy for the opners to face him in this kind of form but I thought Chandimal (Dinesh, made 48) consolidated the platform for myself and Kusal (Perera, made 54) to go out there and play with a lot of freedom. Bit disappointed where we ended up, I thought we could have got 300 plus. We lost three or four wickets in a couple of overs but we can rectify that in the next game:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka captain:

"But yeah these conditions are so demanding for spinners. Our fast bowlers are getting fit, unfortunately Chameera Duschmantha, even Nuwan Pradeep is out so we've got only Seekkuge (Prasanna) left at the moment, but thankfully the conditions are demanding for spinners."
