Refs targeting Stoke - Hughes

Sunday, August 28 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction after Everton beat Stoke City 1-0 with a penalty kick in the EPL on Saturday (27th August). Stoke boss Mark Hughes suggested that he and his team are being unfairly targeted by referees, and that higher profile teams get away with similar offences in the box.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Hughes, Stoke Manager (On the penalty)

"We are frustrated to say the least. I feared this would happen at the start of the season that we would be penalised more heavily more than other teams. I based that on that it has happened to me at other teams I have been involved with, whenever there is a purge or new directive almost inevitably teams like ourselves get the end of the wedge (get the raw end of a deal) and we are the ones that get punished. I have not seen the incident but there was a similar incident in the Tottenham game, similar to Man City, earlier in the day and that wasn't given as perhaps its two high profile teams on TV, perhaps they don't award those against them. It's a frustration at the moment as I didn't think there was too much between the two sides, the penalty has won the game for them. We had chances, they had chances, and at the end of the day it's a key moment in the game, a big decision, and a decisions that needs to be correct and with this one I am more frustrated that the Manchester City one to be honest (Stoke also conceded a penalty against Manchester City in their previous Premier League match)."
