22.50 UPDATE: Rooney plots Man Utd return

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has revealed Wayne Rooney wants to take charge at Old Trafford one day.

"His endgame is managing Manchester United, 100 per cent," Ferdinand said. "It's a fact. If he tells you any different, he's lying! He will want to do that.

"Only time will tell if he's going to be the man to be able to do that. There's obviously a lot of work to be done before that.

"But Frank's gone to the place he will have desired more than anywhere else at Chelsea. Can that happen for Wayne? We'll see.

"I'm not surprised Wayne has done this because I know that's the way he wants to go, from speaking to him. It will be a great opportunity."

22.25 UPDATE: Rugani to Arsenal on cards

Daniele Rugani looks to be on his way to Arsenal with the Gunners just needing to strike a deal with Juventus now.

Serie A transfer guru Alfredo Pedulla reckons Emirates chiefs have agreed a £3.7m-a-season (€4m) contract with Rugani.

And all that's left is for the terms of a two-year loan to be hammered out with the reigning Italian champions.

Arsenal would apparently be obligated to cough up £37m (€40m) at the end of that spell to keep Rugani in London.

21.40 UPDATE: Dybala stance on Tottenham move

Paulo Dybala is not bowled over by interest from Tottenham and could reject them in order to stay at Juventus.

That's according to Italian reporter Nicolo Schira as reports on the continent claim a bid has been slapped him.

"Paulo #Dybala after declined the #ManchesterUnited he is not even convinced of the sirens coming from the London side #Tottenham," Schira tweeted.

"Joya wants to stay at #Juventus, even if [Fabio] Paratici continues to work on the sale. And the background remains alive #PSG ... #calciomercato."

20.25 UPDATE: Big news from north London

Two stories breaking this evening with developments at both Arsenal and Tottenham.

Gunners playmaker Mesut Ozil is being eyed up by DC United as the MLS side react to the impending loss of Wayne Rooney.

Rooney is jumping ship for Derby County next January and DC want a high-profile signing to fill his boots in the US.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are looking to tie up a deal for Mauricio Pochettino's Argentine countryman Paulo Dybala.

Sky Sports Italia claim Spurs have slapped in a bid for the Juventus forward, who Manchester United were recently in talks over.

19.30 UPDATE: Klopp stance on Coutinho

Jurgen Klopp does not want Philippe Coutinho back at Liverpool ahead of the new season.

Klopp waved goodbye to the Brazilian in January 2018 as he forced his way out of Anfield to head to Barcelona.

Coutinho has struggled in Spain, though, and looks unlikely to be a starter under Ernesto Valverde.

The Mirror indicate, however, that he will not be heading back to Liverpool, with Klopp not interested in the playmaker.

18.20 UPDATE: Everton transfer plan

Everton want a defender through the door but Marco Silva isn't sure if it'll be Kurt Zouma.

"What is the priority is the central defender, when cannot go through a tough season with Mason [Holgate], Michael [Keane] and [Yerry] Mina - even if the boy [Lewis] Gibson is working with us, he's not ready yet for this level," Silva said.

"I don't like to talk about Zouma, because he's not our player. I don't need to repeat anything about him. Our fans' reaction shows everything about what we as a club and me as a manager think about him.

"But it's not fair for me [to comment] first because I have to respect the defenders we have here even if they know we want one more, and Zouma is a Chelsea player. It's not the moment to talk about him. If it's not Zouma, it has to be another one with quality to improve our squad and to give competition."

17.25 UPDATE: Tottenham rival Arsenal for Coutinho

Tottenham are interested in hijacking Philippe Coutinho's move to their north London rivals Tottenham.

Coutinho has failed to make a serious impression since joining Barcelona from Liverpool 18 months ago.

And he was tipped earlier today to return to the Premier League with Unai Emery's Arsenal.

However, ESPN reckon Tottenham could jump in and steal the Brazilian playmaker from out of the Gunners' grasp.

17.00 UPDATE: Fabinho to Real Madrid? No

Talk of Liverpool star Fabinho joining Real Madrid has been branded "absolute nonsense" by Merseyside football reporter James Pearce.

Pearce's blunt comment came after Colombian journalist Jose Luis Vergara claimed on Twitter that a shock deal is in the pipeline.

"TOTAL Agreement between Real Madrid and Liverpool," Vergara said. "FABINHO will be player of #RealMadrid before market close.

"He will sign until 2024. More information in the next few minutes. The Brazilian player returns to what was his home for a season.

"The transfer will be made official when the #Liverpool [sign] a replacement. The Spanish club will pay 65M € + 10 in variables, and the player's salary will be 7.5M € annual."

16.20 UPDATE: Maguire deal questioned

Manchester United paid far too much for Harry Maguire and the centre-back is far inferior to Liverpool ace Virgil van Dijk.

That is the verdict of former Reds striker Stan Collymore, who said: "Manchester United finally got their man on Monday with the £80m capture of Harry Maguire but they have paid double his true worth.

"United unveiled their big-money buy on a six-year deal from Leicester after a lengthy pursuit which started last summer after the World Cup.

"I like and respect England stopper Maguire who is a very good player, leader and influence in the dressing room.

"But the 26-year-old is not in the same class as Liverpool's Dutch stopper Virgil van Dijk. For a British central defender with leadership qualities, Harry fits the bill."

14.35 UPDATE: Coutinho 'joining Arsenal'

Philippe Coutinho is joining Arsenal on loan, according to L'Equipe.

The Barcelona outcast is supposedly set to join the Gunners on a year-long deal after struggling in Spain.

The former Liverpool man is surplus to requirements after the signing of Antoine Griezmann and with Neymar potentially on the way.

And he could now join the Gunners before the transfer window shuts.

14.22 UPDATE: Rooney confirmed

Wayne Rooney's move to Derby has been confirmed. The England and Manchester United legend will join in January.

He will take up a player-coach role and earn around £80,000 a week.

Rooney said: "I am very excited about the opportunity that Derby County have provided me with.

"I am looking forward to joining Phillip Cocu, his coaching staff and the first-team squad from the start of January. I am sure I can make a big contribution and can't wait to meet everyone, especially the supporters.

"I am equally excited to begin my coaching career at Derby County working with both the first team and Academy.

12.45 UPDATE: Harry Wilson leaving Liverpool

Liverpool are reportedly locked in negotiations with Bournemouth over the loan of Harry Wilson before Thursday's transfer deadline.

Jurgen Klopp has suggested time and time again that any big deals are unlikely this summer, with outgoings more probable.

One player who had seemingly been made available for sale was Wilson, who impressed hugely while on loan last year at Derby.

Wilson did sign a long-term contract at Anfield last year, but early reports this summer had suggested the club were willing to entertain offers of around £25million.

However, The Athletic's James Pearce now reports a loan deal is now more likely on the cards.

And Bournemouth are leading the chase to bring in the 22-year-old for a season-long loan.

11.55 UPDATE: Two Arsenal targets

Arsenal are keen to bring in a centre-back to replace Laurent Koscielny before the transfer window slams shut.

The Frenchman is on his way out of the club after refusing to travel to the United States for their pre-season tour.

Koscielny is back in his homeland to finalise a transfer to Bordeaux which will see his nine-year stay in north London come to an end.

Unai Emery has drawn up a two-man shortlist to replace the Arsenal captain and they will have to move fast to bring in another new face before Thursday's deadline.

According to Sky Sports they are looking at RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano and Juventus' Daniele Rugani.

11.20 UPDATE: Barca trio looking to England

Barcelona trio Arturo Vidal, Ivan Rakitic and Rafinha are sweating on moves to England as the transfer window closes.

The three players could leave Barcelona this summer but know the option of going to England is drying up.

Barca have added to their midfield this summer with Frenkie De Jong joining and Antoine Griezmann will also take a spot.

And that means some players will have to be moved on although the market is not helping them.

10.45 UPDATE: Trippier on Atletico move

Kieran Trippier has revealed why he swapped Tottenham for Atletico Madrid.

The England defender has made one of the most high profile moves of the transfer window and reveals how he was convinced to join the Spanish side.

"Some English players have come to play LaLiga before," he told Marca.

"Since I was a child I always dreamed of playing abroad, at the age I am now, twenty-eight years old, it was a great opportunity to come to play LaLiga, with a different environment and culture, a different coach; It is a challenge for me, for my family, for my children and I am looking forward, I hope this moment I want to live is successful."

10.30 UDPATE: Rooney latest

Derby owner Mel Morris has confirmed the club are in talks with Wayne Rooney, he told talkSPORT: "The starting point was that we understood Wayne was keen to return to the UK, and of course we had a look at the situation and see if we could do something on the back of that.

"I think the key thing is the conversation he had with [manager] Phillip Cocu was absolutely critical to the interest Wayne has.

"It's never done until it's done, but we are focused and very keen to get this over the line this morning."

He added: "I'm sure once people hear news of this you are inevitably going to get [other] interest, but I'm confident this is something that we'll get sorted out.

"From my side of it, why wouldn't we want a player with his background? His playing career has been phenomenal; he's demonstrated his leadership qualities over in America – who wouldn't want at least the opportunity for this? I can guarantee Phillip Cocu is excited as I am about it."

European clubs have until the end of the month to sign Eriksen but United are looking to get their nose in front.

07.00 UPDATE: Arsenal eyeing defender

Arsenal want to sign a new centre back before the transfer window slams shut at 5pm on Thursday.

The Gunners' rebuilding job has been a difficult one this summer with restrictions on spending after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

They landed William Saliba but sent him back on loan and broke their club transfer record on Nicolas Pepe.

However with the hours ticking down Unai Emery hopes to land at least one more player to bolster his squad.

06.45 UPDATE: Eriksen replacements lined up

Tottenham are looking at replacements for Christian Eriksen should he depart this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with both Bruno Fernandes and Giovani Lo Celso but is running out of time to get either deal done.

According to the Telegraph Tottenham are expecting low-ball bids of around £50m for Eriksen and want a replacement in before letting him go.

Pochettino has been frustrated with the summer's work despite seeing Tottenham break their transfer record.
