Athletic Club extinguish Sevilla's title hopes

Sevilla lost ground in the title race in LaLiga Santander with a 1-0 defeat to Athletic Club at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Monday night.

The hosts began the night six points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid in the table, with their chances of lifting the trophy for the first time since 1946 now seemingly over.

The fair share of goalscoring chances fell the way of Julen Lopetegui's side in the first half, with Lucas Ocampos the first to try his luck from Suso's cross.

Sevilla's top scorer this season, Youssef En-Nesyri, was denied by Unai Simon on a couple of occasions. The Athletic goalkeeper produced a great stop to keep out the Moroccan's header before making a bit of a meal of his later left-footed shot.

The visitors grew into the game after the break, with Asier Villalibre going close when his low effort went just wide of the far post.

Sevilla continued to push for an opener, though, despite Athletic's threat on the counter attack. Ivan Rakitic wasn't far away with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Later in the second half, Marcelino brought on both Williams brothers. Both were dangerous on the break, with Neco Williams having a goal ruled out for offside.

As the hosts threw everything forward in stoppage time, Athletic struck, Inaki Williams rounding off a counter attack with a fabulous finish in to the top corner.

The loss leaves Sevilla still six points behind Atletico in the table. They're also four points adrift of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Athletic, meanwhile, are six points off seventh-place Real Betis and a Europa Conference League spot.
