Injured Messi misses Argentina training session

  • Argentina trained on Monday (29th August) ahead of their first Russia 2018 qualifier on September 1st, where they will face Uruguay.

The Argentine national team trained in Buenos Aires on Monday - without the injured Lionel Messi - ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Venezuela.

It was the first session under the guide of new head coach Edgardo Bauza, who replaced Gerardo Martino, following Argentina's disappointing defeat by Chile in the Copa America Centenario final.

One of Bauza's first tasks as head coach was to convince Messi to re-think his decision to retire from International football. Messi missed in the penalty shootout defeat by Chile, as Argentina lost a fourth major final in nine years.

The Barcelona forward has since reversed his retirment decision - however injury means Messi is unlikely to take part in the upcoming qualifiers. Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has also been ruled out of the two games with a calf injury.

Argentina will head to the city of Mendoza on Wednesday, where they will face Uruguay on September 1st.
