Macclesfield cling onto top spot following fightback against Barrow

Mitch Hancox scored a goal and won a penalty as Macclesfield fought back to beat Barrow 3-1 and cling on to first place in the Vanarama National League.
The leaders suffered an early setback as Barrow’s on-loan Forest Green forward Luke James burst into their box to slot past Shwan Jalal just 11 minutes in. With Sutton leading Solihull, they went top.
Macc went close to equalising when Hancox met a cross with a diving header, but Steve Arnold saved.
Ten minutes before the break Hancox did manage to level with a superb drive from 25 yards out.
Barrow pushed back with James firing wide from another one-on-one but the Cumbrians would concede a penalty for a foul committed against Hancox in the 69th minute.
Danny Whitaker took it and beat Arnold to preserve Macc’s status as promotion favourites.
Thirteen minutes from time Elliott Durrell rubber-stamped the outcome after receiving Scott Wilson’s lay-off.
