Peterhead and Edinburgh City settle for goalless draw

Peterhead and Edinburgh City were forced to share the spoils from their Scottish League Two table-topping clash at Ainslie Park.

Despite numerous chances for both sides, with a total of 27 shots registered and nine of those on target, neither team could make a breakthrough, echoing the result at Peterhead in early February.

Peterhead striker Ross McAllister came closest to breaking the deadlock, only to see his 33rd-minute header strike the crossbar, leaving the leaders still five points clear of City.

Ten-man Clyde moved to within six points of Peterhead and a point behind Edinburgh City with a late 2-1 win over fourth-placed Annan Athletic at the Broadwood Stadium.

Mark Lamont grabbed the opener for Clyde midway through the second half.

Seven minutes from time goalkeeper Blair Currie was sent off for violent conduct, and conceded a penalty that allowed Tony Wallace to fire home the spot-kick for his 12th goal of the season.

But in the third minute of injury time Martin McNiff headed home his second goal in three games to give Clyde a fifth win in six matches and leave them firmly in the hunt for automatic promotion.

Declan Byrne was the toast of Albion Rovers as he scored both goals in a 2-0 win at former club Elgin, providing his bottom-of-the-table side with only their fourth victory of the season.

Byrne, who had previously scored only one goal in his career, netted his brace in the space of 17 first-half minutes at Borough Briggs to give Albion back-to-back wins for the first time since September 2017 and lift them to within two points of ninth-placed Berwick.

Rangers slumped to a 1-0 defeat at mid-table Stirling, the club’s 10th loss in 13 games since the turn of the year.

Substitute Dylan Mackin scored the only goal of the game in the 80th minute – his 11th of the season – from the penalty spot after Jack Ogilvie had brought down Ronan Hughes inside the area.

In the only other game, two sides with nothing left to play for but pride, in Cowdenbeath and Queen’s Park, ground out a goalless draw at Central Park.
