Bolton battle to important victory against fellow strugglers Southend

Bolton hopes of a great escape from the Sky Bet League One relegation zone were boosted by a controversial 3-2 comeback win over fellow strugglers Southend.
Wanderers, who are now two points behind second bottom Southend, trailed to Harry Lennon’s first goal in almost four years.
But Keith Hill’s side rallied with strikes before half-time from Joe Dodoo and Luke Murphy before topscorer Daryl Murphy sealed the points before Timothee Dieng’s late consolation.
However, Shrimpers boss Sol Campbell will point to a brace of turning points in the opening period.
Eight minutes after heading in Sam Mantom’s corner, Lennon was stretchered off after contesting a ball in Bolton’s penalty box.
Dodoo rifled Wanderers level after 36 minutes before Luke Murphy converted a fine left-footed finish in the second minute of stoppage time.
Campbell, though, was booked for protesting after assistant referee, Abbas Khan, indicated offside only to lower his flag early in the build up.
Daryl Murphy scored his fourth goal in five games after 65 minutes following a mistake from Dieng’s mistake.
That proved decisive as Dieng’s 81st-minute header proved a mere consolation in the closing stages of the game.
