Matt Godden made the decisive breakthrough as Coventry beat Sunderland 1-0 to go top of Sky Bet League One.
Godden clinically put the Sky Blues ahead at St Andrew’s inside two minutes with his fourth goal in five games.
But Sunderland were left counting the cost of a poor miss by Tom Flanagan and a goal ruled out for offside.
Godden gave City a dream start after Jamie Allen played him in on goal.
However, the Black Cats should have levelled when an unmarked Flanagan volleyed over from close range in the 18th minute.
Coventry had shouts for penalties waved away, with Alim Ozturk ruled not to have handled the ball on 40 minutes.
Liam Kelly was then denied a spot-kick after going down under pressure from Jordan Willis two minutes after the restart.
Kelly blazed over on 53 and 66 minutes, before Allen had a shot beaten away by Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.
The visitors were denied a 73rd minute equaliser when Luke O’Nien deflected Max Power’s shot in from an offside position.
