They flocked to Weymouth for one reason - to see Team GB win more medals on the waves.
Ben Ainslie delivered as he became the greatest Olympic sailor of all time with a fourth gold medal in the Finn race.
The 35-year-old won silver back in 1996 and his fans were delighted to witness history.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Vox Pop, Tommy, Weymouth
"He (Ainslie) deserves it because you could see from the way he raced, he's proper, he's a competitor, he dug in deep. It got a bit nervy towards the end didn't it and he was absolutely superb."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Vox Pop, Matt, Weymouth
"It's great just to be here and be a part of it really and to witness him (Ben Ainslie) become the best sailor of all time."
Ian Percy and Andrew Simpson claimed silver after being pipped to the Star title by Sweden.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Vox Pop
"It was absolutely fantastic. Great for GB. Ben (Ainslie) in the Finns (Percy and Simpson), the Stars as well and the crowd here and up on the hill were absolutely brilliant."
So, Sunday 5th August ended up being a very successful British day at the seaside.
