Volvo Ocean Race unveil longest ever route

    Route for the latest edition of the Volvo Ocean Race is unveiled.

    Script:

    The twelfth edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will require the teams to cover almost 40,000 nautical miles in over nine months of racing.

    The event will get underway on October 4th 2014 with the first In-Port race in Alicante, Spain.

    The first leg will take the competitors to the north east tip of Brazil.

    From there, the teams will sail their longest leg of the race - going through the Southern Ocean on their way to Abu Dhabi before heading to Sanya in China.

    From Sanya, it's off to Auckland, New Zealand then Itajai in Brazil before sailing north to Newport in the United States.

    The teams will then cross the Atlantic to Lisbon, stop in Lorient in France before navigating their way around the British Isles and up to Gothenburg.

    The race is scheduled to finish with the final In-Port race in the Swedish town on June 27th 2015.
