The extreme heat in Melbourne caused disruption to the day's play, but under the roof in the Rod Laver Arena Rafael Nadal was always comfortable, beating Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

Elsewhere Roger Federer played on the second show court at Melbourne Park for the first time in a decade, and raced to a straight sets win over Blaz Kavcic.

And it was business as usual for defending champion Victoria Azarenka, who beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-1, 6-4.

Meanwhile Gael Monfils was forced to dig deep to take down Jack Sock of America 7-6, 7-5, 6-2. Whilst organisers also announced that Vasek Pospisil had withdrawn from his third-round match against Stanislas Wawrinka, with a back injury.
