Italy have reached the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup.

Fabio Fognini beat Carlos Berlocq of Argentina to give his country an unassailable 3-1 lead.

    Script:

Italy ended Argentina's 12-year streak of reaching the Davis Cup quarter-finals.

That was thanks to Fabio Fognini's 6-7 , 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 win over Carlos Berlocq in Mar del Plata.

It gave Italy an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five series.

Italy, who won the Davis Cup in 1976, took control of the tie with victory in the doubles on Saturday.

Fognini and Simone Bolelli defeating Argentina's Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zeballos.

Fognini, the world number 15, had also beaten Juan Monaco on Friday.

Argentina were without Juan Martin del Potro, who is skipping the Davis Cup to concentrate on tour events, while David Nalbandian retired last year.

It's only the second time since 1998 that Italy have reached the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup, where they'll play another surprise outfit, Great Britain who put out the United Stares.
