Top seed and world number one Novak Djokovic cruised into the third round of the Madrid Open in Spain on Wednesday (4th May), following a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win over 19 year-old Croatian Borna Coric. French Open champion Stan Wawrinka was beaten in the second round by Australia's Nick Kyrgios. Japan's number six seed Kei Nishikori overcame a second set wobble to beat Fabio Fognini of Italy. Roberto Bautista Agut and Tomas Berdych won their second round matches
Number four seed Stan Wawrinka faced rising Australian star Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the Madrid Open .
It was the latest instalment of a rivalry that has been far from friendly at times,with Kyrgios claiming another notable victory over a top ten opponent, 7-6(7), 7-6(2) in an hour and 48 minutes.
Kei Nishikori was looking to continue his run of good form as he took on Italy's Fabio Fognini in the second round .
Fognini appeared poised to cause an upset in the deciding set after taking a 4-3 lead with another break, but when serving for the match at 5-4, Nishikori broke back, held for a 6-5 lead and then broke the Italian again to take the match 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
Nishikori faces Richard Gasquet for a place in the quarter-finals - a man he's never beaten in six attempts.
Roberto Bautista Agut defeated fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the second round winning 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
World number eight Tomas Berdych also secured his place in the third round
He beat qualifier Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-3.
Having seen fellow 'top four' name Stan Wawrinka get knocked out by 'next generation' rising star Nick Kyrgios earlier top seed and world number one Novak Djokovic was in no mood to be upstaged by another 'new kid on the block' in the second round
The 19 year-old Croatian Borna Coric, the youngest player in the top 40, was handed a chastening lesson in tournament play beaten 6-2, 6-4.
