Muguruza powers past Williams for maiden slam

  • Garbine Muguruza beat Serena Williams 7-5 6-4 to win the French Open title on Saturday (4th June).

Garbine Muguruza faced Serena Williams in the French Open final on Saturday, with the former seeking her first Grand Slam title, and the latter her 22nd.

It was a repeat of the 2015 Wimbledon final that Williams won in two sets, but it was Muguruza who had won their previous French Open encounter in the second round in 2014.

Top seed Williams started strongly dropping just a single point in her first two service games.

But a double fault saw her hand Muguruza the first break of the match to lead 3-2, and the Spanish fourth seed duly converted that into a 4-2 set lead.

Williams wrestled back control of the set, reeling off three straight games to lead 5-4, before Muguruza broke again and pushed on to take the set 7-5.

The second set began with three breaks of serve, but it was still Muguruza who was dictating, and she eased into a 3-1 lead.

Williams battled to hold serve in the fifth game, emitting a huge "come on" of relief when she closed to 3-2.

She produced a stunning hold when trailing 3-5, fending off several championship points, but the Spaniard remained solid on her own serve.

A superb lob at 5-4 40:0 seemed to take both players by surprise - Muguruza looking to the crowd for confirmation of whether it was in.

And it was - she claimed a 7-5 6-4 win for the first Grand Slam title of her career.
