Djokovic wins his maiden French Open title

  • Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 to win his maiden French Open title, and complete a career Grand Slam on Sunday (5th June).

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic met in the Roland Garros final with both men seeking to win the French Open title for the first time in their careers.

Though Djokovic had dominated most of their most recent meetings, it was Murray who prevailed in the first set.

He recovered well from losing his opening service game to cruise into a 4-1 lead and went on to close out the set 6-3 with his third opportunity.

But it was Djokovic who pushed on.

He took the second set 6-1 and snatching an early break in the third set, he seemed to be in total control.

Murray was unable to capitalise on the rare chances he created, and Djokovic soon eased into a 2-1 set lead having taken the third set 6-2.

Yet again Djokovic was able to break early in the fourth set, and served for the Championship at 5-2.

Murray produced an inspired series of points to break back, before producing a solid hold to close to 5-4 in the set.

Djokovic created - and faltered on - two Championship points in the tenth game, but Murray's resistance eventually ran out allowing the top seed to win 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 and take the title.

The Serb becomes the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams at once.
