Del Potro beats Dimitrov in straight sets

  • Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Juan Martin del Potro opened his grass-court season with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Grigor Dimitrov at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, Germany on Tuesday (7th June).

Following the conclusion of the French Open final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, there's no time for rest- the grass season is here- starting with the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.

Still on the comeback trail following a fourth operation on his wrist, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro has dropped from a career-high ranking of 4th to 223rd in the world, a dissapointing and frustrating drop for him.

He came up against 2014 Wimbledon semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov.

This is del Potro's first grass-court tournament since reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2013, and he dismissed Dimitrov in 69 minutes, firing 12 aces and dropping only 10 points on serve.

Del Potro needed just a single break of serve to take the first set - and then powered through the second, taking a 4-0 lead before Dimitrov managed to win a game.

Like del Potro, the Bulgarian has also struggled with his form of late, and was unseeded in Stuttgart.

He has fallen to 36th in the world from a career-high 8th and struggled here. Del Potro taking the much needed win, 6-4, 6-2.
