  • John Isner fought off a stiff challenge from Juan Martin del Potro to win their first-round encounter at the Aegon Championships on Wednesday (15th June).

Script: Still on the comeback trail following wrist surgery, former Wimbledon semi-finalist Juan Martin del Potro came up against big-serving John Isner in the opening round at the Aegon Championships.

Isner's 25 aces brought his total for the year to 513 - more than any other player on the ATP Tour - and he won through 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 after a closely fought match.

With no break points in the opening set, it was eventually decided by a tie-break - which Isner claimed by seven points to two.

The second set was tense, as Isner faced - and saved - a total of six break points before securing a timely break of his own to lead 5-4.

This was all Isner required for victory, and he served out to love to win through to round two, where he will face Gilles Muller of Luxembourg.
