Thiem cruises through to Gerry Weber Open semi-final

Saturday, June 18 2016 by SNTV
  • Third seed Dominic Thiem cruised into the quarter-finals of the Gerry Weber Open with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili on Thursday (16th June).

Dominic Thiem leads the men's tour with 47 wins notched up so far this year, the latest coming against Teymuraz Gabashvili in the second round of the Gerry Weber Open.

Although Thiem fell a break behind in the opening set, Gabashvili was ultimately no match for the Austrian's athleticism and power- Thiem taking the first set 6-4.

The second set was a simple one for Thiem- he went 5-0 up. Although Gabashvili managed to pull one game back on his own serve, the third seed advanced to the quarter finals with a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Local favourite and 2011 champion Philipp Kohlschreiber awaits Thiem in the last eight, in a rematch of last week's Mercedes Cup final, which Thiem won in three sets.
