Suarez Navarro battles past Kerber as upsets continue

Saturday, June 18 2016 by SNTV
  • Carla Suarez Navarro booked her place in the final four of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham on Friday (17th June) with a 6-4 1-6 7-5 win over Angelique Kerber.

Second seed Angelique Kerber met world number 16 Carla Suarez Navarro, with a place in the final four at the Aegon classic in Birmingham at stake.

Both players had completed second round matches earlier in the day after rain delays backed up the playing schedule.

Navarro, the sixth seed, edged a tight first set before allowing Kerber to take full control of the second.

But the Spaniard recovered to take the opener 6-4.

She then took control of the second with an easy 6-1 win.

Kerber appeared to have regained the momentum during a final set in which she was three times within two points of victory.

But it was Navarro who prevailed, dispatching her second German of the day following her earlier win over Andrea Petkovic.

And the games are coming thick and fast for Navarro with less than 24 hour's recovery time before her next.

She meets the only remaining seed, Madison Keys, for a place in the semi-final.
