Zverev serves up shock win over Federer

  • Alexander Zverev beat the top-seeded Roger Federer 7-6 5-7 6-3 in the semi-finals of the Gerry Weber Open at Halle in Germany on Saturday (18th June).

    Rising star Alexander Zverev was the clear underdog heading into his semi-final clash with Rodger Federer at the Gerry Weber Open on Saturday (18th June).

    Federer was hunting his ninth title at the tournament, but Zverev did not look overawed and the German took the opening set 7-6 after a tiebreak.

    The number one seed had to up his game, and did in the second, playing some lovely strokes to win it 5-7 and set up a deciding set.

    Rather than stumble and fall away Zverev rallied back and gained a crucial break to take a 4-2 lead.

    Federer had no answer and the young German served up the biggest win of his career, knocking out the number one seed to take his place in the Gerry Weber final.
