  • Florian Mayer beat Dominic Thiem in straight sets on Saturday (18th June) to reach the final of the Gerry Weber Open at Halle in Germany

Florian Mayer made an excellent start to his semi-final clash against Dominic Thiem at the Gerry Weber Open on Saturday (19th June).

The experienced German broke Thiem in the opening game, before running into a 4-2 lead.

Mayer closed out the opening set with a big ace to lay down an early marker.

Thiem has been in good form, but he was out of sorts here as Mayer broke in the first game of the set once again.

Mayer continued to dominate play and put himself on the verge of victory.

The world number 192 served out the match to become the lowest ranked player to make a tour final since 2013.

Mayer will meet fellow German Alexander Zverev in the final.
