Wesley Korir won the Boston Marathon on Monday in a heat-slowed time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, 40 seconds - more than five minutes behind the worlds best, established last year by Geoffrey Mutai.

It was the second-slowest Boston race since 1985, as temperatures rising into the 80s slowed the leaders, causing as many as 4,300 entrants to sit this one out.

But there were still 22,426 runners who braved the heat.

Sharon Cherop won the women's race to complete the Kenyan sweep in a time of 2:31:50.

There was a thrilling race down the home stretch, but Cherop just outsprinted Jemima Jelagat Sumgong by two seconds.

Her fellow champion Korir was the 19th Kenyan men's winner in 22 years and more than happy to join the dynasty.

SOUNDBITE: Korir (English, on winning and the Olympics):

(Do you think this puts you in the Olympic Games?)

"To me I think running the Boston Marathon is an Olympic event. The way we know the history of the Boston marathon to me I think it's the Olympics of every marathon. So I don't care what comes up after this - I'm just really, really happy to win Boston."

Mutai had been hoping a repeat victory would earn him a spot on the Kenyan Olympic team, but he dropped out after 18 miles with cramps.
