As the birthplace of the modern triathlon, San Diego was the perfect setting for seventy competitors to enter the water for the penultimate ITU Wold Triathlon before the Olympics.

Following the 750 metre swim - a group of eight women exited the water at the front- giving themselves a 30 second lead on the chasing pack.

Britain's Helen Jenkins and Australia's Erin Densham built on their lead over the eight laps of the 20 kilometre course.

    Others were less fortunate...

Densham was looking for her third consecutive podium of 2012 and she pulled away from pack at the start of the run.

It soon become a two horse race with Densham and current world champion Helen Jenkins battling it out.

Jenkins, who came second in Sydney last month, had the greater stamina, as the Welsh woman sealed victory in under two hours, over one minute ahead of Densham.

    America's Laura Bennett finished third.

Jenkins leads the championship with Densham in second and New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt in third place after two events.
