Then he put the hammer down in the first lap of the run.

Surging ahead to win by a comfortable 38-second margin over Russians Alexander Bryukhankov and Dmitry Polyanskiy.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jonathan Brownlee, Madrid winner:
"Yeah, it was a perfect scenario really. That's what I wanted coming into the race, was a fast swim, well done to Richard Varga for pushing the swim. At the top of the hill we were hearing 40 seconds or something on the main park. And then every single time it was going up and up and that encouraged everyone to work. Everyone else was great, parking, everyone was working really well together. There was no one who really missed a turn for the whole 40k. It was pretty impressive. Well done to everyone and then I got onto the run and felt good, felt okay for the first half and then pushed on from there."

His time of one hour 51 minutes and 49 seconds keeping the Madrid title in the family for the fourth year in a row.
