  • Intro:

Uganda's only medal winner at the London Olympics cried tears of joy as he was welcomed home by hundreds of people, delighted by the African country's first gold since the 1972 Games in Munich.

Stephen Kiprotich received a hero's welcome as he returned home to Uganda on Wednesday.

Kiprotich was unknown to most Ugandans before winning the Olympic marathon in London on Sunday.

The 23-year-old sealed Uganda's first Olympic gold medal winner in 40 years when he crossed the finishing line on the Mall in a time of two hours eight minutes.

A prison warden by day, Kiprotich had to train in Kenya to achieve his Olympics dream due to a lack of facilities for athletes - an issue that Kiprotich has urged the Ugandan government to address.

"We are suffering. A lot of athletes are there, they have talent but they, some of them have not (been able) to discover their talent, because we have no facilities."

Lawmakers are now considering a motion to declare Kiprotich a national hero and 100,000 US dollars have been collected in a fund-raising campaign for his benefit.

Despite all the personal fanfare, Kiprotich has his priorities in order - he has already asked the Ugandan president to build his parents a house.
