New champions were crowned as Pete Jacobs of Australia and Leandra Cave of Great Britain overtook a world-class field under difficult conditions at the 2012 Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

Jacobs, who finished second at last year's race, captured his first World Championship title to extend a run of victorious Australians at the event to six straight years.

Finishing in 8:18:37, Jacobs ran his way to the title after beginning the marathon more than seven minutes behind.

Cave had a solid race from start to finish and overcame surges by multiple competitors throughout the run to secure her first World Championship title, crossing the line in 9:15:54.

2000 competitors from over 60 countries took on the 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike and 42 km run course.
