Heavy rain waterlogged the riding course at the venue of the Modern Pentathlon World Championships on Friday, making it impossible for the horses to compete in the penultimate event of the women's final.

With the competition now suspended until Saturday, Great Britain's Olympic silver medallist Samantha Murray leads the field after two events.

Latvia's Elena Rublevska won the fencing, scoring 1,000 points, with Murray finishing in fourth with a score of 928.

The Brit then recording the quickest-time in the pool, clocking two minutes, 10.58 seconds which gave her the overall lead - before officials announced that competition would be suspended for the day.

UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann said, "The most important thing is the safety of the athletes and the horses, so with these conditions, it was simply impossible to continue. I have been involved in the sport for 50 years and have never experienced conditions like these. Sometimes you just have to accept the will of nature."

France's Elodie Clouvel stands second overall, 48 points behind Murray, while Russian Alise Fakhrutdinova sits in third.
