Alicante hosted its first ITU World Cup event on Sunday.
A two-lap 1.5 kilometre swim was followed by a hilly and technical six-lap 43 kilometre bike course, before the races finished with a four-lap flat 10 kilometre run.
Francesc Godoy, Igor Polyanskiy and Alois Knabl were the first three out of the water in the men's contest.
Three riders - Conor Murphy, Pieter Heemeryck and Wikus Weber - reached the second transition with a short difference of 30 seconds over the main favourites.
But when all the athletes began to run, the leading trio was quickly absorbed.
Thirty-two year-old Swiss Sven Riederer took top honours in a very tight finish - his time 1 hour 53 minutes 44 seconds.
Meanwhile, just two weeks after claiming the overall 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series silver medal, Jodie Stimpson took the tape in the women's race.
The British athlete, who managed her second World Cup gold after Guatape 2012, was towards the front from beginning to end.
Stimpson was very close to the first ladies out of the water - Lucy Hall, Carolina Routier and Rachel Klamer.
Then during the first run lap, Stimpson broke clear.
Behind her were Italy's Alice Betto, European champion Klamer, of the Netherlands, and fellow Briton Hall.
Stimpson's winning time was 2.02:39, with Betto the runner-up in 2.03:24.
