Kenyan runner Wilson Kipsang stole the headlines in the Berlin Marathon on Sunday.

He broke the world record in a time of 2 hours, 3 minutes and 23 seconds.

The 31 year old smashed the previous record, held by compatriot Patrick Makau from the same race back in 2011, by 15 seconds.

Kipsang explained afterwards his impromptu race tactics:

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Wilson Kipsang
"I think when I looked up I saw that the time was a little bit becoming slow. So I really decided, and I was still feeling strong, so I decided to push it because I knew that to run a little bit faster was not really a problem for me."

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya was second while another Kenyan Geoffrey Kipsang - no relation to Wilson - completed the podium places.

The women's crown also went to a Kenyan Florence Kiplagat, who strode home in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 13 seconds.

Compatriot Sharon Cherop finished second while third place went to Irina Mikitenko of Germany, who set a new over-40 world-best time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 54 seconds.
