South African lawyer assesses Pistorius trial

  • Intro:

A South African judge ruled on Tuesday (25th February) that television stations can broadcast parts of Oscar Pistorius's murder trial live.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English), Marius du Toit, South African lawyer:
"I think one must always understand that you have a scenario where the accused has the right to a fair trial and that must always be balanced against the right of the media to show this to the world and when any witness testifies one must understand you know its easy to say listen that witness deposed an affidavit therefore he will testify exactly what was written in his statement - but it's not as easy as that because you are dealing with people that are every day folks who's biggest mistake was staying in the same area where Oscar stays, or perhaps you are dealing with a person that saw something that can now contribute to the trial. These people are not people who are comfortable in front of cameras necessarily. They are people who might not necessarily be comfortable speaking in public and now suddenly they have to come and testify in an open court not only testifying they are scrutinised world wide - every word they say is being publicised world wide and I think for that purpose that might be an argument in court to say it must be limited."
