Church and Thomas welcome London NFL franchise

Thursday, November 06 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker JT Thomas said his team would "love to be" the franchise in London if the NFL were to move a side to England and added "every time we play over here in London man, it's like a Superbowl".

Meanwhile Dallas Cowboys safety Barry Church has backed a new NFL franchise for London and told SNTV on Tuesday (4th November) that he hopes that the sport can eventually have participation in the Olympics, or have it's own American Football World Cup.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Barry Church, Dallas Cowboys safety (On his recent form)

"I feel like it was the worst game I played as a Cowboy in recent history, so I've got to step up my game and I thought I did that against Arizona Cardinals, which was last week, but I feel I have got to step up even more for our defence. Being a leader of the defence I feel I have got to step up more against the Jacksonville Jaguars - hopefully we can get that obtained."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Barry Church, Dallas Cowboys safety (Q: There has been plenty of suggestions about a NFL franchise in London, how do players feel about that?)

"Me personally I feel like it's a great idea to have a London franchise. I feel like expanding the game from United States to Europe, to anywhere, is great for the game in general. Hopefully we can expand it enough where we're able to have an Olympic team here and there and just like how it is here with soccer, you guys have an Olympic team and World Cup teams. Hopefully if we expand our NFL brand enough, that we can have an Olympic or World Cup of football, American Football that is, and we can get that accomplished."

Q: Do you think it would struggle to catch players and to recruit players having a team over here in London considering they will have to travel of course themselves?

"Oh I definitely feel like in the early on stages it would take a while for it to catch on and for the players to agree such, you know because that is a lot of travelling, eight weeks out of the year you are going to have to travel to the States. I feel like it's going to take a while to catch on, but I feel like eventually people would grow interest over here in American Football and it would catch on and they would come to the States and hopefully we can expand this brand."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jeff Heath, Dallas Cowboys safety (On the Cowboys being favourites)

"You know one thing, I've played in the NFL for two years, one thing I have noticed records are really irrelevant, every team has talent. You've got to bring it every week or you're going to get your butt beat. So really you can look at the records, that's more of a media thing, the media likes to look at the records and compare teams, but you know we're not doing that and we know we've got to show up, they have got a lot of talent."

SOUNDBITE: (English) JT Thomas, Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker (Q: Travelling to London how difficult is it to adjust in your preparations for a game?)

"Well this is my second year to London and after you get past the first day, you get a good nights rest, it's pretty much the same routine for us and being here in London for us is like a second home, we can't wait to come every year and it's good to be here again."
