  • Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce claimed her third Athletics World Championships 100 metres gold in Beijing, China

Script: Before Monday evening's Athletics World Championships action in Beijing, former IAAF president Lamine Diack presented the men's 100 metres medals

Usain Bolt clinched the gold for a third time, beating American Justin Gatlin.

The men's 400 metres semi-finals were then held - Grenada's Kirani James, winning the first with Botswana's Isaac Makwal and Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa winning the other two.

Colombia's Caterine Ibarguen successfully defended the women's triple jump title, with a season's best of 14.90 metres, extending her unbeaten run to 29 events - a sequence dating back to London 2012.

Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot sealed a second World Championships 10,000 metres title, holding off the challenge of Ethiopian Gelete Burka to win.

She completed a 10,000 and 5,000 metres double in Daegu four years ago and has now won four World Championships golds across the two distances.

Kenyans filled the top four places in the men's 3,000 metres steeplechase, with Ezekiel Kemboi clinching gold for a fourth World Championships in succession.

He finished strongly and crossed the line with his compatriots Conseslus Kipruto and Brimin Kipruto taking silver and bronze, respectively.

The day's action climaxed with the women's 100 metres final.

Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce followed team-mate Bolt's example and won in 10.76 seconds to clinch a third world title over the distance.

Dutch athlete Dafne Schippers, collected silver in a new national record time with Tori Bowie of the USA completing the podium places.
