  • Scotland won a World Rugby Sevens Series Cup final for the first time on Sunday (22nd May), beating South Africa 27-26 in the London Sevens decider at Twickenham Stadium.

The 2016 World Rugby Sevens Series reached its conclusion on Sunday with the second day of the London Sevens - the final round on the calendar - taking place at Twickenham Stadium.

There was a shock in the third quarter-final of the Cup competition, where the USA hammered 12-time champions New Zealand 42-14, with Perry Baker scoring four of the 'Eagles'' six tries.

The first semi-final pitted a formidable Fiji against a South Africa side that were their closest rivals in the final standings.

And it was the South Africans who came out on top, beating their Fijian rivals 26-21 to reach their fourth Cup final of the season..

Joining them in the decider would be Scotland, who reached a World Series Cup final for the first time after beating defending London champions, USA 24-17 in the second semi-final.

And with just minutes of the final remaining Scotland found themselves 26-15 down against a dominant South African side who looked set to win the season on a high.

Dougie Fife however had other ideas on his mind as he found space to edge Scotland a little closer in the dying moments and with 25 seconds left on the clock the game was kept alive.

At the restart with South Africa doing all they could to hang on, the Scots reclaimed the ball and Fife stepped past three would-be defenders and dived over to seal a 27-26 win.

A delighted Scotland celebrated their first ever Sevens World Series Cup win and Fiji were once again crowned Sevens World Series champions in front of the London crowd.
